CERMET
CERMET (short form for Ceramic Metal composites) is an industry is undergirded by the new science of unusual behaviors exhibited by certain materials treated under high temperatures and/or stress environment. This largely understudied and little understood area of science holds great potential for the future. This emerging technology of metallic oxides and metallurgic combination parameters is mainly exploited by defense and electronic industries.
At Ascendent Technologies, we are developing several cermets for defense applications particularly in the area of infiltrated ceramics and metal bonded ceramics. Such composites exhibits high stress resistance while maintaining some, if not, all of its ballistic properties. The technologies developed are mainly used in the design of two categories of armour, which exhibits high hit density kinetic energy resistant articles such as:
- Hybrid CERMET Armour - Where full dense material is used in conjunction with porous infiltrated materials to create various threat specific solutions
- Metal Embedded/Encased/Bonded Armour - Pioneered by the British in the Chobham system, it is a closely guarded secret up till the present. Such armour systems though lower in weight when compared to the RHA Steel systems, provides exceptionally high protection and can be used as part of the structures of vehicles. Ascendent is pioneering the use of in-house developed aluminum alloys to chemically and mechanically bond to ceramic articles to form this basic raw material for such an armour article.
